The Engineering Logic of Point-of-Use Cooling

The logic of point-of-use cooling is simple: cool the operator, not the entire space.

For operators on open-air equipment, the traditional fix is an enclosed cab with an integrated HVAC system. The problem is that most forklifts and other material handling equipment don’t have one, and adding an enclosure to an entire fleet is a significant capital investment that also reduces visibility and increases maintenance overhead.

Point-of-use cooling sidesteps the enclosure problem by routing conditioned air through a flexible, adjustable hose directly to the operator, so the system only has to cool the air immediately around the person doing the work. No enclosure is needed.

The efficiency advantage follows from that narrowing of scope. An enclosed cab AC system has to maintain temperature across a sealed volume, cycling continuously against heat radiating through the cab walls and roof. Point-of-use, personal cooling systems condition a fraction of that volume—just the operator’s immediate airspace.

Why Traditional Open-Air Cooling Fans Fail

Another traditional cooling method is industrial fans, which are still the default in most warehouses. However, they are an imperfect solution that comes with its own set of issues:

  • Moves hot air around without lowering its temperature
  • Circulates dust, packaging debris, and exhaust fumes
  • Generates ambient noise that can reduce operator awareness of nearby equipment and alarms

In 95 °F ambient temperatures, a warehouse fan blows 95 °F air. The operator feels a breeze, but the fan does little to alleviate heat fatigue and stress.
